The original animated film ‘Cars’ hit the silver screens in 2006. It featured an anthropomorphised character based on a 996-gen Porsche 911 Carrera called Sally Carrera. Now, Porsche and Pixar have come together to build a road-legal version of Sally, but based on the modern-day 911 (992-gen).
The one-off project, dubbed the 911 Sally Special, will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s as part of the 2022 Monterey Car Week. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to two charities — Girls Inc. (for young girls) and USA for UNHCR (an org. that supports refugees from Ukraine).
Included in the project were Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Animation Studios, and Bob Pauley, the Production Designer who first penned the design of Sally Carrera for the movie. They worked with members of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and Style Porsche to make a brilliant version of their beloved character.
The Sally Special is based on the current Carrera GTS, the highest specification of the 911 Carrera lineup. It is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder that churns out 473hp and 570Nm. Since Sally loved going on memorable drives over crushing lap times, the 911 Sally Special gets a manual transmission.
The custom paint job in Sallybluemetallic was hand-applied to match the character, and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur made special efforts to implement Sally’s tattoo hidden under the active rear wing.
More bespoke details include the five-spoke wheel design from the 996-gen 911 reinterpreted and adapted to the 20-/21-inch wheels of the current-gen 911 Carrera GTS.
The characterful details carry through to the interior of the cabin as well. Various bits of trim around the cabin such as the dashboard and the central console are also finished in Sallybluemetallic. The retro-tastic Pepita houndstooth fabric upholstery is paired with chalk-coloured leather and stitching highlights in Speed Blue.
There are a handful of other cool details inside this one-of-one 911. It gets Sally Special illuminated side sills and the Cars movie logo embossed into the door cards. That logo can also be spotted on the caps for the tyre valves and on a small plaque on the rear quarter panel window. The passenger side of the dashboard also gets an insert with the Sally Special branding. But our favourite detail is the lettering on the Sport Chrono drive mode selector which now reads “Kachow!”
The final product is a work of beauty. Sitting next to a life-size Sally Carrera, the beauty of the 992-gen 911 Carrera GTS truly stands out. It’s a shame there’ll only ever be one of these from the factory, the Sally Special earns its moniker and we hope it can raise a significant amount of money at the charity auction.
