At the 2017 SEMA Show, while Hennessey took plenty of headlines with the Venom F5, there was another interesting car that caught the attention of petrol-heads. A special project under the banner of the Ringbrothers, a carbon-bodied and beefed up 1972 AMC Javelin AMX, called the “Defiant”.
The Javelin AMX gets a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 Hellcat engine but the 697 bhp wasn’t enough. So, they threw out the stock supercharger and replaced it with a bigger 4.5-litre Whipple unit to turn up the power to 1036 bhp. The hood, front fenders, frille and front valace are made of 3D printed carbon-fibre bits. Other mods on the Defiant include a custom rear suspension, side exhausts and an updated braking system.
Prestone commissioned the Ring brothers, Jim and Mike, to build the Defiant as part of the brand’s 90th-anniversary celebration. Hence the distinct yellow paint job, the colour named Jalop Gold. In true SEMA fashion, it’s a car purely for the fun of it, but a memorable build in the muscle car genre. Well done.
