It’s showtime in Japan with the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. Always a good one for some crazy, spectacular or simply heart-stealing car previews and concepts. Honda already had one such headliner moment at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year with the Urban EV Concept. Now on home turf, they unveiled its sibling – the new Sports EV Concept.

The Japanese manufacturer has gone for a retro-modern aesthetic again and has nailed it with this two-seater all-electric sports car concept. It is based on the new platform dedicated to electric vehicles in the Honda lineup, same as the one premiered with the Urban EV which will see a production version by 2020. There is no word though if the new Sports EV Concept will also be one day a car you can buy, though we really hope Honda does make it so and in that circumstance, don’t expect it to hit stands before 2021.

There is still no word on the specifics on the powertrain or performance from Honda regarding these pure-electric concept cars but it would be foolish to expect too much. Enough to make it as much fun to drive as it is to look at, that’s fair no? While we did get to see inside the Urban EV Concept, there was no preview of interior design either on paper or on the show car at the floor of the motor show.

Honda has described the styling of the Sports EV Concept as having “unforgettable styling, a friendly front fascia that naturally blends in with any lifestyle, and rich and supple surfaces bring happiness and a even a fondness in ownership.” Well, we’ll agree with the designers at Honda, the Sports EV Concept does make us happy, and we really hope it sees its way into being a production car.
