The fun folks at Donut Media have put together a nifty video to show us exactly how we’ve progressed over the ages with the design of a rather important component of a racing car, the steering wheel.

It follows the changes from three-spoked coarse wheels, to when electronics started getting integrated, making it not just a means to change direction, but more like a complicated computer. There’s the quick release, hand clutch paddles, shift indicators, fuel settings, brake bias and so on.

Steering wheels on race cars have evolved so drastically that they haven’t even been circular in shape for a long time now. For making that video, Donut Media has used wheels from the Racing Hall of Fame, wheels once gripped by racing legends all the way from 1950s till today, speeding through history to show us how how they’ve been ‘turned’ around. Enjoy.
